Dahlias

Dahlias are an absolute delight. They are easy to care for and bring you masses of vibrant flowers that can be left to colour your garden or bought inside to decorate your home. In fact, Dahlias have so many flowers, it is easy to do both! Dahlia flowers bloom summer to autumn or around December to April.

If you are picking Dahlias it is best to do so in the morning, they will last longer. You can also scald the stems in hot water after picking to improve their shelf life. Don’t forget to remove the foliage before you put them in a vase as it rots and gets smelly.

Dahlias thrive in many areas of Australia. Plant in a sunny position in compost rich, moist, well drained soil. Plant them so they are protected from strong winds. We also recommend staking at the time of planting to avoid root disturbance later on. A top dressing of fertiliser 2-3 times during the growing season is recommended to keep your Dahlias flowering well.
